Four

Everything was okay. Other people met their mates all the time. If those mates happened to be human, there were bound to be some complications. Right? Yeah, mates probably passed out all the time.

No big deal.

Completely fine.

Remi was not freaking the hell out—thank you very much.

Dressed in only a pair of boxer briefs, he stood at the foot of the bed and stared down at his new mate. Kol looked to be resting peacefully, but what the hell did he know? He’d bedded his share of humans, but he’d never bitten one. He knew a few shifters who had mated humans, but not well enough to ask them about something so personal.

Kol’s eyes moved from side to side beneath his closed lids, his long lashes fluttering adorably against the tops of his cheeks. He rolled his head to the side on the pillow, and his plump lips parted on a sigh. Then, he was still again.

“Maybe I should call a doctor.” Remi looked over at his brother, eyebrow arched in question.

Thank the gods for Ruger. He hadn’t hesitated to rush back to the suite when Remi had called him. Granted, he hadn’t been much help so far, but he was there, which eased a little of Remi’s panic.

Ruger watched Kol with a furrowed brow. “I don’t know if a human doctor could do anything for him. I mean—” He waved his hand toward the bed. “—he looks okay.”

For the most part, Kol looked no different than he had when he’d walked into the room. His fair skin was still flushed an alluring pink, but otherwise, there were no visible signs of distress.

“So, he just fainted?” Ruger asked.

“Well, he warned me he was going to pass out first.” He smiled at the memory. It was a strange brand of politeness, but one he found oddly endearing. “He even apologized for it.”

He’d expected a chuckle, or at the very least, a smile. His brother frowned.

“Are you sure he’s your mate?”

Remi spared him a sideways glance but didn’t say anything. A question that ridiculous didn’t warrant a response. It was like asking him if he remembered how to breathe. Even now, with his emotions all tangled and snarled, he felt the connection between him and Kol. He could practically see the shining, golden threads of fate weaving them together.

He knew his mate’s last name was Livingston, though Kol had never told him. He knew the guy was an only child, had just celebrated his twenty-eighth birthday, and that his parents had retired to Arizona the previous summer. Kol’s favorite color was purple, he loved spaghetti, and teen sitcoms were his guilty pleasure.

Remi had gotten all these things directly from Kol’s head while he slept. He wasn’t sure if it was because of their telepathic bond, or something deeper he didn’t really understand yet, and really, it didn’t matter.

It wasn’t an exhaustive list of all the things that made up Kol Livingston, but it was a pretty damn good start. He had time to figure out the rest.
